Under a magnificently designed Prabhavali with beautiful motifs and patterns, and decorated with red curtains forming small arches, is seated the Goddess of eloquent speech and melodious music, Saraswati, the eternal consort of Lord Brahma. Along with Parvati and Lakshmi, she forms the divine triad known as Tridevi. Goddess Saraswati is associated with Rajas Guna (mode of passion) and thus assists her husband in creating the material world after its annihilation by Lord Shiva. As her name suggests, every aspect of Saraswati emphasizes the importance of self-realization which is the goal of every living entity. She is the giver of both material and spiritual knowledge to the jivas (individual souls).
Framed in finely polished teakwood, this Tanjore painting gloriously displays Goddess Saraswati seated on a huge throne in lalitasana, her left slightly raised up. She is graciously attired in a golden saree with red borders and perfect pleats that spread gracefully between her legs. Her four arms represent the four heads of Lord Brahma; with the upper left and lower right arms, she plays a musical instrument called Veena from which a sweet rhythm of the flow of Vedic knowledge flows, a rosary of crystal beads in her upper right hand tells the importance of chanting the holy names of the Supreme Lord Vishnu or Krishna, and in her lower left hand she holds Vedic scriptures that lead us to the knowledge of the Absolute Truth. Her fair-complexioned body is adorned with several beautiful ornaments and a huge crown on her head completes her divine look. This painting is elaborately inlaid with 24 Karat gold along with sequences of shining stones that accentuate the aesthetic look of the unique Tanjore style artwork.
