Devi Rajarajeshvari is a Mahavidya. The word Mahavidya is a portmanteau of ‘maha’, which means great, and ‘vidya’, which means awareness. It refers to the ten feminine deities (Dasamahavidya) of keen consciouness, of which She is one. She is known as the ultimate divine personification of Shakti and is the most beautiful of the Mahavidyas.
The Rajarajeshvari Tanjore painting that you see on this page depicts Her as the sachamara-rama-vani-savya-dakshina-sevita, a verse which refers to Her being waited upon by Lakshmi and Sarasvati in unison. A tall sprig of sugarcane in one of the four hands of the chaturbhujadharini, and an image of the Purusha (Lord Shiva) somewhere in Her iconography.
Pure gold italy on Her saree, layered over solid gessowork. More of the same is to be found on the arched edge of the backrest of Her throne and the attire as well as adornment of the rest of the deities in this painting (starting from Lakshmi and Sarasvati on either side of Her, to the Brahma and Vishnu figures seated around Her throne).
