Dressed in pitambar, the holiest of colors, Goddess Rajarajeshwai is immortalized in gold in this Tanjore painting. The wife of Lord Shiva, she is one who holds many names—Shakti, Tripura Sundari, Amba, Parvati. She is the manifestation and balancer of a new cosmos and the destroyer of the previous one. Through Brahma, she creates the universe. Through Vishnu, she succors the universe. Through Shiva, she annihilates the universe.
The entire pantheon of Hindu gods bows down to her and worships her. It is said that when Goddess Parvati was trying to win Lord Shiva back, she wanted to charm him in all her glory. So, she took the form of Rajarajeshwari to reveal her eternal beauty. In this painting, she sits on a regal throne as befits her, one foot resting on a delicate lotus flower. She holds sugarcane in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other, symbolizing the sweetness of the divine mother. The other two hands hold a noose and a goad. In front of her, two days are lit in reverence, lighting the way for her as she lights the way for those who believe in her. She is embraced by golden jewelry that settles beautifully against her saree.
