Goddess Rajarajeshwari in Hindu Tantra is the supreme mother, the “queen of kings” and the third amongst the powerful Dashamahavidyas- ten great wisdoms. In this splendid Tanjore painting, Maa Rajarajeshwari appears in her characteristic form, wrapped in a traditional saree, adorned magnificently with the crescent moon on her crown, and a solar halo behind her face. She sits on a grand throne, in Lalitasana or the posture of royal ease, with the potent Sri Yantra placed near her dangling leg. Offerings of flowers and light in the foreground create a devotional environment, in this painting which is a gem from the treasure of Thanjavur arts.
