Goddess Lakshmi is also known as the Goddess of fortune because she blesses her devotees with wealth, prosperity, fortune and abundance. But her blessing is not limited to the material platform, she showers her special grace upon those who seek the path of the Absolute Truth by providing them the spiritual wealth which is the ultimate goal of human life. Since she is the eternal consort and internal potency of Lord Vishnu, she is always engaged in His loving service and assists Him in maintaining and sustaining the entire Universe. Thus, she is associated with Sattva Guna (mode of goodness).
Here, Goddess Lakshmi is seated on a throne in Ardhapadmasana. Attired in a perfectly pleated red saree and adorned with several heavy gold ornaments and a flower garland worn over her shoulders, she looks as beautiful as the glowing sun. A huge crown on her head and the aureole behind it represent her exalted personality. She holds a lotus flower in each of her upper hands, the lower left hand is in the boon granting Varada Mudra, and the right hand is in Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of fear not) from which a stream of gold coins pours down. A pot full of such coins is kept between her left thigh and calf. A soft and gentle smile on the fair complexioned and beautiful face of Lakshmi shows her extremely merciful nature towards the devotees. Finally, the shine of the pure gold coating lights up the entire presentation of this Tanjore painting and evokes a feeling of bliss.
