The Tanjore painting that you see here portrays the beautiful Goddess Gayatri who is the personification of the powerful and sacred Gayatri Mantra. She is also considered as a form of Saraswati, the eternal consort of Lord Brahma. Tanjore paintings are famous for their unique and special descriptions of devotional icons embellished with pure gold work and studded stones for its beautification, and the same can be observed here. This characteristic feature of Tanjore artwork makes it stand out from the ordinary ones and the precision with which this is done is undeniably praiseworthy.
Framed in teakwood, this colorful painting depicts Goddess Gayatri seated on a full-blown lotus placed over a swan (her mount) in the middle of an ocean. The tiny waves of the ocean as if blessed, glorify the Goddess with bliss. Her five faces having different colors represent the five elements; air, water, fire, ether, and earth that make up a human body. The fives arms on her left side hold a conch shell, an axe, a bow, a lotus flower and the Vedas (the source of spiritual knowledge). Her five right arms carry a discus, a mace, a pot of ambrosia, a lotus while one hand is in Abhaya Mudra (hand gesture of fearlessness). She is gracefully dressed in a saree and sitting padmasana. Her fair complexioned body is adorned with several jewels and a beautiful flower garland. Behind her five heads is a big and round aureole which is like the fire of her power.
