The painting that you see here gloriously portrays Goddess Gayatri who is the personification of the powerful sacred Gayatri Mantra mentioned in the Vedic scriptures. She is revered as a form of Saraswati who is the eternal consort and internal potency of Lord Brahma, the creator of the material world. Framed in teakwood, this Tanjore painting has been elaborately embellished with pure gold coating perfectly studded with sequences of tiny stones to give it an extra beautification. This characteristic feature of the Tanjore style artwork makes it stand out from the ordinary ones.
Here, in an ocean, Goddess Gayatri sits graciously atop a full-blown lotus placed over a nicely decorated swan (her divine mount). The ocean also grows many small lotuses blown to glorify the power of the Goddess. Her five heads of different colors facing the three directions represent the five elements of nature that make up the human body; air, fire, water, ether, and earth. The ten arms carry different items; the five left arms hold a conch shell, an axe, a lotus flower and the Vedas (the source of spiritual knowledge) while the five right arms hold a discus, a mace, a pot of ambrosia, and a yellow lotus. She is gracefully attired in an embroidered saree and sits in padmasana. Her anterior crowned head holds upon it a crescent moon. The Goddess is beautifully adorned with several jewels on her glowing complexioned body. The above Prabhavali is precisely designed with intricate detailing which is eye-catching.
