The image of the Devi of plenitude, executed in vibrant jewel tones and embossed with 24K gold. She is Lakshmi surrounded by two gaja (elephants), which gives this iconography of Hers the name of Gajalakshmi. Clad in a vermillion-coloured saree brocaded in gold and superimposed with studded gold ornaments, these parts of the painting comprise pure gold embellishments in keeping with true Tanjore style.
Tanjore painting is the anglicised name of the school of painting that emerged in 1600 AD in the ancient town of Thanjavur. The work that you see on this page is a contemporary, superbly faithful reproduction of the traditional Gajalakshmi iconography in this idiom. From the gesso work to the glass beads embedded in the gold, which resemble rubies and emeralds, these capture the glamour of Devi Lakshmi.
The throne of the Devi is flanked by inlaid pillars. A temple-style gateway of solid gold arches over Her head. Voluminous curtains of red and green silk, against which grazes the zenith of Her pure gold crown. The seated figure is framed by a series of powdered pink petals of rose and lotus. At the bottom of Her throne are two wide-mouthed vessels, filled with gold coins and the petals of freshly plucked petals each.
