This Tanjore style painting displays Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati making a divine triad, worshiped in the festival of Deepawali. Lord Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and thus worshiped first in every auspicious ceremony and rite. Lakshmi is the Goddess of fortune and the divine consort of Lord Vishnu and assists Him in maintaining the Universe. Saraswati is the bestower of knowledge of the Absolute Truth and the eternal consort of Lord Brahma, thus, assists Him in creating the material world.
Goddess Lakshmi, attired in an embroidered green saree, is seated on a throne in Padamasana. She holds a lotus flower in each of her upper hands, the lower right hand is in Abhaya Mudra and the left hand is in boon-granting Varada Mudra. In the center, Lord Ganesha with the head of an elephant and the body of a human is beautifully embellished with several gold ornaments.
He is holding an axe and a noose in the upper arms, a broken tusk and a modak sweet in the lower hands. Goddess Saraswati is clad in a pure white saree. She is holding a rosary of beads, a Veena, and Vedas in her four arms. She gives the importance of chanting and glorifying the holy names of the Supreme Lord. This artwork is precisely and beautifully embellished with pure gold and shining stones and therefore, evokes a feeling of tranquility and bliss.
