The rare iconography of veenadhari Ganesha. Possessed of (‘dhari’) the veena, a classical musical instrument, the chaturbhujadhari Ganesha has a little-known musical side (the veena, however, is associated heavily with Sarasvati, His sister). In the Tanjore painting that you see on this page, the brother has the same serene composure of countenance as the sister.
A divinely fair, elephant-headed Ganesha. The ornaments on His portly form and the crown on His head are glittering with pure gold embellishment. This kind of metallic-inlaid gessowork is the signature aspect of the traditional art of Thanjavur. The head and body of the veena are also made of the same gold inlay.
More of the gorgeous metallic embellishments are to be found down the front of the Lord’s throne. In fact, the entirety of the temple entrance structure in the foreground is made of gold-topped gessowork. The gold-layered sections of this Thanjavur painting are embedded with red and green stones that resemble rubies and emeralds.
