In the form of Mahaganpati, Lord Ganesha comes as the slayer of the sins of vanity, selfishness and pride. There is a certain power with which he has been portrayed here, with the kind but all-seeing eyes. He removes obstacles from his devotee’s path of success and brings prosperity. He is the God who is worshipped before any other at auspicious moments and ceremonies. On his left thigh sits the physical manifestation of his internal potency (Shakti). She is draped in an emerald saree, complemented by the green of the heavy drapes and the light green of the grass below. While she holds a dusky complexion, Lord Ganesha is fair-skinned, creating a beautiful contrast. Her right-hand holds a pink-tinted flower.
Lord Ganesha is dressed in pitambar (yellow), the colour of learning and knowledge. The elephant-headed Lord sits on a mound of grass, two hands blessing his devotees while the other holds various articles like lotus flowers, a noose, a mace, a sugarcane stock, a pot of gems, a discus and a flower bunch. They are both bedecked with golden work, embossed and shining. Colourful stones line the whole painting, giving it a feel of the traditional style of Tanjore paintings.
