Portraiture and royal events were a popular theme with artists in the era gone by; not to speak of devotional or religious art. Depiction of day to day events, market places or women engaged in domestic activities were rare and less appreciated.

The miniature painting of a fruit seller and buyers is delicate, lyrical and rich in colouring. Assortment of fruits give reason for liberal use of colour – stacked in shelves, displayed in baskets, they leave no room for anything else. The figures of the seller and the buyers are graceful and complex since they gaze at each other and are related through their movement and gesture. The seller is seated with a knee raised and the other bent – a posture not so graceful but comfortable nevertheless. She has some fruit and a weighing stone in the metal balance. The women engaged in buying fruit seem to be involved in some discussion. All three are similarly dressed and ornamented. There is no difference in the status of all three where dress and jewellery is concerned.

The fruit shop has pillars on the side and a rich canopy over it. The fruits are not only placed inside the shop, but also hang around it. They provide space for little else in the background.
