Helpless in love, the beauteous Radha succumbs to His charms in the arms of Her lover. Krishna, with those blue overtones in His wild mane, turns Her face up to His as if to take Her in the kiss of the divine. Their eyes are shut; and, despite the clean, bold lines that define their twin features, their faces are brimming with sensuous expression.
A peacock-plumage palate for the chhavi of Krishna. Skin the colour of molten emeralds, a particularly vivid tint upon the eyelid. Whereas, for Radha, She is all gold and blush and ochre, clothed in robes of amber (‘peeta’).
Across the foreground, the flute of Krishna (without this, the iconography of the cowherd would be incomplete). In the remaining surface area of the canvas, unassuming splotches of colour make up the background.
