Zoological portraits representing birds and animals are a highlight of Mughal art. They appear either single or in pairs. Of all the animals, elephants fascinated them the most.

In this painting, the figures of the elephants dominate the whole composition juxtaposed against a subdued background. It is a simple composition, accommodating the protagonists i.e. the elephants, more spaciously, to allow maximum detail. Portraying violent action are two massive elephants engaged in a fight. Violence seems further strengthened, as the elephant on the right has broken the chains he was bound with. The Mughal emperor's were extremely fond of elephant fights and reared elephants specially for the purpose. Their ornaments show that both belong to the same stables. The area immediate to the elephants is shaded in soft green. The artist has thus made an attempt to subtly uplift the images of the animals.

The right corner of the painting gives a definitive impression of the ground and the upper left corner gives a partial view of a palace in the distance. However, both these elements do not have any impact on the main composition.
