The beauty of Devi Sarasvati has been captured in great detail in this Tanjore painting. On a throne encrusted with jewels sits the veenavadini (the one possessed of the veena). Its long, slender, golden neck shines in Her fair hands as She strums it, the music emanating from its belly as serene and beauteously composed as the Devi’s pristine face.
Devi Sarasvati’s saree is composed of pure gold gesso-work. The gold is inlaid with miniscule semi-precious stones of red (predominantly) and green, giving the impression of rubies and emeralds. A garland of freshly plucked lotuses in a delicate pink colour cascading all the way down to Her seat. A series of lotus petals in white against which lie the golden hems of Her saree.
The hallmarks of the authentic, traditional Tanjore painting are intact in this composition. A temple entrance-like structure in the foreground which, with all the gold gesso-work and the red stone inlay, features the glamour of the ancient Indian temple. The unremarkable, solid-coloured background brings out the beauty of the painter’s handiwork.
