A Madhubani art is the quintessential folk art form from Bihar which has a lineage of more than 2500 years. It is a reflection of the culture and tradition of the people of Mithila (a village in Bihar) and a popular ornamentation for the walls. A black and white Madhubani is a reflection of some of the oldest and most beautiful arts that people can admire and witness, which is graciously depicted in this painting. Every Madhubani art is hand crafted on a customized paper canvas enhancing its durability and beauty. This dancing peacock is painted in stylized fish feathers and a multiple layered traditional boundary. The leaf patterned feathers extended on either side are embellished with a triple geometric and floral border and centre filled in with a happy-going fish design.
The large one formed like the sun at the back has precisely painted designs in an eye-catchy order and a circumference beautified with small peacock feathers in a continuous ring. Carefully note the perfect usage of multiple shades of black and white that lead to an enhanced charm to this painting. Artist’s level of creativity and imagination can also be analyzed by the way peacock’s body is painted, with the head of a peacock having characteristic bulging eyes and the lower body of a fish.
Beauty of this art is that it is done using everyday materials like twigs, fingers, matchsticks, pen nibs etc and naturally derived colours. The environmental and mythological themes depicting birds, fish, animals and Hindu deities are a primary concern in Madhubani art, which the sculptor has accurately depicted with the mixed formations of peacock and fish symbolizing fertility and ecstasy respectively. The pattern of flowers at the bottom is identifiable of it being a vastu compliant in terms of good luck and positivity.
