A Tanjore painting such as this one would make a valuable addition to the home of any art-loving devotee of Lord Ganesha. On a plinth strewn with lotus petals He dances, the complexion of His body as roseate as those freshly plucked petals. A garland of turgid budding lotuses sways about Him as He motions.
The dynamic aspect of this painting makes it a worthwhile buy. Each of the six arms of the shashabhujadhari (six-armed) Lord is in a particular stance. Most of them are gripping the traditional elements associated with His iconography - weapons and lotus and laddoo - but each is imbued with unique, lifelike detail.
The gaze emanating from Ganesha’s sweet, innocent face is the most lifelike aspect of this composition. Framed by a crown of pure gold and shapely elephant ears, more of the gold-on-gesso is to be found in His dhoti and ornaments and the weapons in His hands. The dark teakwood frames brings out the gold along the upper and lower edges of the painting.
