Within the thick-set frame of charcoal-coloured wood, is the divine image of Krishna. The fair Gopala (the name given to His baala-roopa or child-manifestation) sits on a velvet-upholstered swing of turquoise and gold. His limbs are in a rudimentary lalitasana and He is feeding on butter-made goodies from a pot almost as big as Himself.
There is a twinkle in the eyes of the Lord, much like in those of naughty children. His fair, chubby child’s body is overlain with bejewelled gold ornaments. These sections of the Tanjore painting have been made with pure gold embellishment over solid gessowork. The same holds true for the chains that suspend the swing from the ceiling, the body of the swing itself, and - of course - the pot of butter. The same metallic embellishment frames the figure, arranged to resemble a temple entrance archway.
