Attended by a gopi who holds a parrot in her hand—a symbol of ardent devotion—Lord Krishna sits on a pedestal, joyful as he enjoys a piece of butter. Ever since he was an infant, the Supreme Lord loved indulging in his desire for butter. Even in this Tanjore painting, he holds a pot full of butter for his enjoyment.
His love for butter was so strong that he would often steal it from his neighbourhood in his childish innocence. This incident had occurred so often, however, that his mother Yashoda had decided to tie the earthen pots full of butter high off the ground, far from the reach of tiny Bal Krishna. One afternoon, after she had put Krishna to sleep, Yashoda decided to bring water in from the well, sure that her son couldn’t be up to any mischief if he was asleep. However, after she left, he awoke and called up his friends and a couple of monkeys. He had been contemplating how to get the butter down and had come to a solution. He told the boys to make a ladder and they huddled together on the ground. Krishna climbed up over their backs to reach the pot and it was a success!
