This painting is completely absorbed in the greatest motherly affection and love. Yashoda, the mother of Krishna was unaware of the fact that her child is the Supreme Lord and loved Him as her own child. Thus, Krishna, the source of all pleasures, gave her the highest form of pleasure in return. This is a Tanjore style painting and therefore, it has been perfectly embellished with pure gold coating and studded stones.
Here, Krishna is portrayed in His childhood form, adorned with a peacock feather on the head, a wide kamarband (waistband), and long gold neckpieces. His naughty activities were always an astonishment for mother Yashoda. She is attired in a beautiful Saree and holds bowl of butterballs in one hand. The cowherd boy Gopala Krishna is accompanied by His beloved Surabhi cow and a sweet calf. He sucks the milk from the breast of the mother cow and when He sees mother Yashoda offering Him butterballs, which He is very fond of eating, He immediately leaves drinking the milk and asks her for the butterballs. Mother Yashoda knows that Krishna is a naughty boy and thus, chastises Him so that He does not go the houses of the gopis in order to steal fresh butter.
Whenever Maa Yashoda used to chastise Krishna, He would make a pitiable face and act innocent. Seeing this, Yashoda would give Him all the butter to eat. In this way, the pastimes of butter Krishna were a means of giving the residents of Vrindavan pure bliss.
