Upon the bosom of the maternal river flows all that is strong and sturdy and full of life. They flow along Her current and give meaning to Her. Yet, on the banks of the same river, She accommodates the weak and faltering and those which are past their prime.
This deceptively unassuming watercolour depicts a dilapidated boat. Of substantial proportions, it stands cleated to some worn-out pieces of wood upon the riverbank. In this state it has lain for quite some time, as indicated by the glittering green overgrowth of moss along its wooden body, left to rot by its owner who has made as much of it as he could.
In fact, varying shades and tints of green make up the colour palette of this painting, especially in the distorted reflections in the water of the riverside shrubbery. Despite the sombre, weatherbeaten tone of the composition, the jaunty silhouette of the mouth of the boat impresses the viewer.
