"Yatra naari poojyante, ramante tatra devata"- "A place where women are worshipped, becomes the dwelling of the gods". This is the sacred guidance of our ancient texts but lost in the whirlwind of modern worldliness, we seem to be forgetting the divinity of the feminine. As a visual commentary on the condition of women, Jugal Sarkar has presented on his canvas, a profound imagery.
The foreground of the painting is taken by a mud figurine of Devi, in the form mainly worshipped in Eastern India. The figure is in a dwindling state, representing the degradation of the value of women in society.
In the background, the innocent face of a young girl, gazing straight at the onlooker in an emotive manner is painted, around whose neck the weight of the mud figurine seems to be hanging. Symbolizing the burden of distorted tradition that women carry, this juxtaposition comments on society's hypocrisy, which limits women's limitless potential, in the name of culture.
