Dressed in a pitambara kafani and eyes holding kindness, this Tanjore painting is a portrait of Shirdi Sai Baba. On his hand is the word Om, which is said to be the primaeval sound of the creation of the cosmos. It is the original noise from which spawned off all the other noises. He performed miracles and made premonitions.
During one of the summers when he lived in Shirdi, when the harvesting was finished and the grains that were going to feed the entire village were stored in a yard, the very air blew feverishly. As if randomly, Baba called a man named Kondaji Suthar and told him that his fields were on fire. Panicked, he went to his fields but found them to be completely fine. So, he returned to the mosque, outside of which Sai Baba was sitting, and reported his findings. Then, Baba told him that he should go back and recheck it. When Suthar returned, just as Baba had said, one of the sheaf of grains was on fire, smoke rising steadily from it. The winds were hot and strong that day and the fire began to rapidly spread. The villagers called upon Baba to help them. He walked over to the fields and sprinkled some water on one of the sheafs, proclaiming that the fire would cease. As he said, it happened, and a crisis was avoided.
