The Tanjore painting that you see here magnificently portrays Lord Ganesha or Ganapati, the sweet and noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. He is revered as Vighnaharta Shri Ganesha for he removes all the obstacles from the path of success in the lives of his devotees, bestowing upon them abundance and prosperity. He is often worshiped at the start of every auspicious ceremony and rite. But he showers his special blessings on those individual souls who seek the path of the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Lord Vishnu or Krishna, by giving them the highest knowledge which is the greatest need of every living entity in this material world.
Tanjore paintings are known for their matchless depictions of devotional icons that make them stand out from other ordinary paintings. Here, Bhagwan Ganesha, who has the head of an elephant and the body of a human, is seated upon a huge throne with its back designed in Kirtimukha prabhavali making a big aureole behind his crowned head. His trunk is turned towards his left and bears one whole tusk and the other one being broken, for which he is also known as “Ekadanta”. A big green pillow is placed on the velvet seat of the throne which makes a great color combination with the bright yellow dhoti of the lord which is wrapped around his legs down to his ankles. His left leg is folded on the seat while the right leg goes down on the floor making lalitasana posture. He is beautifully adorned with several ornaments on his fair-complexioned body; the long neckpiece reaches to his pot-belly. He carries an elephant goad and the noose in his two upper hands while the lower right hand is in abhaya mudra and the left hand holds his favorite sweet “modak”. He is accompanied by his divine mount mooshak who is always engaged in the loving service of his master.
