Holding his own broken tusk in one hand and a sweet modak in the other, Lord Ganesha sits on a raised pedestal, pure and divine. He is the one who is worshipped before starting any auspicious task. Despite his childlike appearance, he is wise beyond his years. In his youth, he and his brother Kartikeya once fought over an unfamiliar yet alluring fruit. They went to their parents, Lord Shiva and Parvati, and told them about their dilemma. Neither wanted to give the fruit up. Lord Shiva devised a solution. He had recognised the fruit, known for its boon of immortality and wisdom to those who deserved it.
To determine who the fruit would belong to, Lord Shiva asked Kartikeya and Ganesh to complete three rotations around the world. Whoever would finish first would win the fruit. Kartieya took the help of his vahana, a peacock, and flew off to finish the race. Mushak, Ganesha’s vahana, was not up to the task, however. So, in order to win the race and the favour of his parents, Lord Ganesha thought of something unique. He walked around Shiva and Parvati three times. Confused, they asked him why. He responded that for him, his parents were worth more than the world and the cosmos. And thus, he won the race with his wisdom and took the fruit.
