The Devi of plenitude, the harbinger of prosperity and the guardian of resources, is seated in the belly of a gigantic lotus bloom. The tips of its pink, gold-rimmed petals quiver delicately against Her legs, which are clad in a saree of brocaded green silk. There is no end to the jewellery She is wearing: it is symbolic of Her cosmic status and divine role.
The posterior hands of the chaturbhujadharini (four-armed) Devi Lakshmi bears a lotus each. The ones in Her hands are of realistic proportions, but no less in terms of the natural glamour of this unusual flower. Between them is a soft-featured face aflush with the roseate hue of eternal youth. There are some pinned in Her hair at the base of the crown, an ornately carved piece of solid, bejewelled gold. About Her shoulders and down the length of Her back, all the way down to Her hips, cascade a mass of gorgeous black curls.
From the Devi’s anterior hands flow a steady stream of gold pieces. They gather in neat stacks in the foreground of the canvas. Along the midline is a wide-hipped pot, its body studded with emeralds and rubies and its mouth brimming with precious metal.
