Guru Padmasambhava is commonly known as Guru Rinpoche, translating to “Precious Master.” Guru Rinpoche is regarded as a fully enlightened and awakened being, essentially a Buddha. Unlike a gradual path to enlightenment or practicing the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni to attain enlightenment over time, Guru Rinpoche is believed to have incarnated as a fully enlightened being from the start. In his form, he is holding a five-pointed vajra in his right hand, it represents the five Buddhas of the cosmic directions and the five kayas of the anuttarayoga tantra. On his other hand he is holding Kapala (skullcup) which represents the transformation of delusion into perfect wisdom, the skull also symbolizes great bliss and a symbol of impermanence.
He is also holding a Khatcanga (tantric staff) which is a ritual instrument held in the crook of the left arm. Below him there were the seven-jewel insignia or seven primary possessions of Chakravartin: a pair of elephant tusks, a unicorn/ rhinoceros’ horn symbolizing the precious horse, the round golden earring of precious Queen, the square golden earring of precious minister, a branch of coral and eight-faceted flaming jewels in pyramid formation of six visible.
