In Tamil Bhakti tradition, Sri Tirupati Balaji is the supreme manifestation of the divine power- the cosmic parent, who with Devi Padmavathi (Lakshmi) guards and nurtures his children. In this horizontally laid Tanjore painting, Lord of Tirumala and Devi Padmavathi grace the canvas, accompanied by Pancha Devata (Five Deities), who enrich and sanctify the artwork with their heavenly powers.
The central space is adorned by the twin images of Balaji and Maa Padmavathi, exquisitely adorned and emanating a celestial aura. A beautiful blue color resembling the vast horizon is used in the background, against which four individual shrines- two belonging to Veenavadini Saraswati, third to Krishna, and fourth to Karttikeya with Valli and Devasena, are depicted.
In the foreground of this Thanjavur artwork, goddess Lakshmi with a tree as her aureole (symbolizing the fertile power of her roopa as Bhudevi) stands amidst two ornately designed peacocks. An exchange between Tanjore and European artistic elements is visible in the violin held by the attendants of Krishna and the angels hovering over the images, showering them with flowers. This supremely sacred Tanjore painting is no less than a potent shrine in your space, beautified with a luxurious green drape and outlined by a monotone wood frame.
