Lord Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion. The iconography of Avalokiteshvara that you see on this page captures His ever-suffering and boundlessly merciful side with perfection.
On a milk-white lotus petal He stands, His feet as white and soft as the mythical flowers of the Buddhist heavens. Possessed of a thousand limbs and a thousand golakas (organs) of vision, a thousand minds within a thousand heads. Avalokiteshvara’s one-of-a-kind anatomy is deeply symbolic - they convey His great power and propensity to come to the aid of the suffering multitude.
The motifs in the background - cloud and mountain peak and waterbodies - are in keeping with traditional thangka art. A minimalistic yet expressive colour palette.
(Clockwise from top left) Ratnasambhava and Amitabha in the upper two corners of the canvas, Mahakala and Manjushri in the lower. This goes to show that every Buddhist deity is a composite of the entire pantheon.
