The pot-bellied Lord Ganesha, who is the noble son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati stands on a full-blown lotus that represents purity. Having eight arms (Ashtabhuja) carrying different items and weapons, he stands with a lion with exposed teeth, a ferocious face, and a curved tail. His mount “Mooshak” also accompanies his master who is always ready to serve him with pure love and devotion. He is clad in short-length dhoti and is adorned with several glittering ornaments on his fair-complexioned body. A huge jeweled crown adorns his head and a beautiful aureole can be seen behind it.
This Tanjore painting gloriously portrays the leader of all the ganas (attendants) of Lord Shiva having the head of an elephant and the body of a human and the way it has been embellished with pure gold studded with shining stones along the outlines is undeniably praiseworthy. He removes all the obstacles from the path of success (both material and spiritual) of his devotees and is thus worshiped at the start of a very auspicious ceremony and rite. Known as the patron of sciences and arts, he also grants the devotees the ultimate knowledge of the Absolute Truth so that they can come out of the cycle of repeated births and deaths, and enjoy permanent happiness in the spiritual world. This painting depicts his merciful as well as powerful form. With his four left arms, he holds a trident, a sword, a discus (chakra), and a conch shell. The other four arms hold a mace, a pot of jewels, and the noose. The sweet face of the lord is very mesmerizing and by merely looking at his weapons, his power can be felt.
