A glorious and serene depiction of Gajalakshmi, one among the eight primary forms of Goddess Lakshmi (Ashtalakshmi). She is considered to be the bestower of the power of royalty and prosperity in the lives of the jivas (individual souls). The special feature of this painting is that it has been elaborately embellished with pure gold coating along with sequences of shining stones for the beautification of the icon. This aspect of Tanjore style artwork makes it stand out from the ordinary ones.
Goddess Gajalakhmi, as her name suggests, is flanked by a white elephant (gaja) on her either side lifting their trunk up so as to glorify the Goddess. Having eight crowned heads and eighteen arms, she is elegantly seated in padmasana on an encrusted-gold throne. This is a dynamic aspect of the Goddess where all her power is shown to be exhibited in her arms carrying different items. The left arms hold a conch shell, a sprig of sugarcane, a bow, a lotus flower, and a pot. The right arms hold a discus, an arrow, a sword, a flag, a sprig of wheat and corn, and a flag. The anterior arms are in Abhaya Mudra and Varada Mudra. Dressed in a lustrous and perfectly pleated saree and adorned with several jewels, she appears as glowing as the sun. As she sits in padmasana, the pleats of her saree gracefully open from between her legs. Her merciful glance and soft smile are enough to put one into the state of tranquility. The child Subrahmanya sits on her lap holding a lotus flower, his eyes filled with immense love for Gajalakshmi.
