Annapurna has eight arms, three lotus eyes and a pleasant smiling face. Her youthful face looks radiant and tranquil which signifies her radiance of charm. Her full breasts look exquisite in Newar earrings. Notice the details of bracelets, anklets, an intricate neck chocker, and a chained silver medallion as lower clothing. She is embellished in multicolour silk. Her hair is tied in a chignon on one side and billows loosely above her shoulder. Although she has a placid demeanour she wears a garland of freshly served, blood-dripping and eerily lifelike asura heads strung together with a chain.
With her first pair of hands, she makes the buddhapatra mudra like Chenrezig in front of her heart, with her right hand supporting her skull cup and her left index finger and thumb in the gesture of granting refuge. With her second pair of right and left hands she makes the boon granting varada mudra of supreme generosity and holds golden dorje and a ritual bell. With her fourth pair of hands, she wields aloft a fiery sword and a shield and a set of scriptures.
Devi Annapurna sits in a 'roya; ease' pose atop the huge coils of a large naga-serpent, symbolising her dominance over the Eight Great Nagarajas or 'serpent king' who may bring about drought, disease and famine. A bright wish-granting jewel crowns this writhing and fiery naga-serpent, which spews flames from its fanged and forked-tongued mouth. The fire shrouds and emerges from the furious sea which denotes the catastrophic and halcyon blend of this thangka painting.
