At the end or beginning of her performance, the dancer has been captured by the artist, in the hopes of infusing movement and life in wood.
Standing on a square pedestal, the dancer represents balance and grace, with her tilted neck and hands spread on each side conveying a swift and beautiful motion. Her hair is in a neat bun, allowing us to look at her face, which carries a lost expression as if the dancer is only half-present on the stage as her mind wanders off.
A blouse and a lower body garment are her attire, with fine carving and polishing highlighting the folds and tightness of the knot on her waist.
The artist’s attention to detail can be seen in the reverse, where fine lines are used to carve the hair, and meticulous polish and carving make the wood appear nearly transparent on the calf of the dancer.
