About the CD

Vintage 78 RMP records is a collection of classical vintage recording featuring doyen of Hindustani classical vocal and instrumental music which go as far back as to the 1930s and 40s and are typically pieces of three to four minutes. Recorded exclusively with HMV (over 100 years old music company) now popularly known as Saregama. There is a ample evidence that all the artistes chosen in the series had developed each in his/her own was a brilliant technique to encapsulate in very short space the golden peaks of vitality and exuberance of classical music. It is for the very for the very first time that for the connoisseurs of classical music exclusive 78 RPM recording are being made available on CDs.

About the Artiste

Gaantapasvini Mogubai Kurdikar was born on 15th July 1904 in Kurdi, God. When she was six her mother Jayashreebai took her to a Hardasi Keertankar. This first training in music lasted for only four months. Circumstances forced mother and daughter to resort to Marathi musical theatre for their survival. Shri BalKrishnamama Parvatkar took her under his tutelage and arranged for her learning of Hindustani classical vocal music from chintubuwa Gurao and Ustad Inyat khan of Hyderabad at Sangli. During this stay at Sangli, sutad Alladiya khan of Atrauli Jaipur Gharana happened to hear her voice and accepted her as his disciple in 1919. Later on she shifted to Mumbai and learnt from two great masestros from agra Gharana, ustad Basbi Khan and Ustad Vilayat Hussain khan. Ustad Alladiya khan arranged for her training from his brother Ustad Haider khan too. In addition to Aakara singing of Jaipur Atrualli gharana, Bol-ang gayaki were the basic traits of her gayaki. She received “Sangeet Natak Akademi Award” in 1968 the “Padmabhushan” in 1974 and “Tansen Purushkar” in 1989. She got recognition as “Gaantapasvini Mogubai Kurdikar”. Her disciples are Gaan saraswati Kishori Amonkar (daughter) smt. Kamal tambe, Smt. Kaushalya Manjeshwar. She breathed her last on 10th February 2001 in Mumbai. This legendary artiste has been recorded only with us only in 78 RPM record format.
