Rajesh Khanna could perhaps be called as Hindi Cinema’s first superstar. In fact the term ‘Superstar’ was coined for him. No rise of a star has been as dramatic or spectacular as that of Rajesh Khanna. From 1969 to 1973, the Rajesh Khanna phenomenon swept Bollywood off its feet and the hysteria he generated was unlike anything seen before and after.
Born Jatin Khanna, he adopted the screen name of ‘Rajesh’. After a stint in theatre, he was selected by the united producer’s talent contest. He made his film debut in Chetan Anand’s ‘Aakhri Khat’ (1966). But it was ‘Aaradhana’, released in 1969, that made Rajesh Khanna a star. Barely a short while later in the same year, Raj Khosla’s ‘Do Raaste’ starring Rajesh Khanna went on to be a golden jubilee hit. Coincidentally, in Bombay, the two films had their main theatres right across the road from one Another, ’Aradhan’ at opera house and ‘Do Raaste’ at Roxy!
He went on to give a string of hits and was labelled a ‘phenomenon’ by the media. He assumed a legendary status drawing a huge crowd in public places. Fans kissed his car, which would be covered with lipstick marks, and lined the road, cheering and chanting his name. Female fans sent him letters written in their own blood.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Anand’ saw perhaps his greatest ever performance as a man stricken with cancer but wanting to live life to the fullest before he dies. His brilliant association with music director R.D. Burman and ‘his voice’, singer Kishore Kumar resulted in some of the most memorable songs of Hindi films. He formed one of the most successful romantic pairs with Sharmila Tagore and Mumtaz.
Rajesh Khanna won the Best Actor Filmfare trophy for his memorable performances in ‘Sachcha Jhutha’, ‘Anand’ & ‘Aavishkar’ and was nominated for the Best Actor Award as many as 11 times. The BBC made a film on him, called ‘Bombay Superstar’. In the month of April 2003, the Maharashtra Government conferred upon the Raj Kapoor award for his contribution to the film industry.
