Be it ancient of medieval, oriental or western or the prevailing style of music practiced in the modern world, the unequivocal presence of percussion instruments is a universal phenomenon. Kerala has a variety of percussion instruments, which are mostly made of wood and with playing surfaces made of animal skin. Among them one could find unique ones like the Mizhavu, the popular chenda, the divine Thimia, the classical Mridangam; including the Thappu, the smallest of percussion instruments used in Kerala.
