At the early age of 9 Pancham composed the tune which was used by Dada Burman as “Ai Mere Topee Palat Ke Aa” in “Funtosh” and next year for “Pyaasa” “Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye” which became a big hit.
After coming to Bombay on completing his matriculation. RD learnt the sarod under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and later Ashish Khan. He began to assist his father in music – direction. The first film he signed as an independent music director was “Bhoot Bangla” though his first release was “Chhote Nawab” for the same producer.
Dev Anand (“Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” “Heera Panna”), Shakti Samanta (“Amar Prem,” “Kati Patang”), Ramesh Sippy (“Sholay,” “Seeta Aur Geeta”), Ramesh Behl (“Jawani Diwani”), Vinod Chopra (“Parinda,” “1942 – A Love Story”), Nasir Hussain (“Teesri Manzil,” “Caravan,” “Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin,” “Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai”) and Gulzar (“Parichay,” “Ijaazat,” “Kinara,” “Khushboo” “Aandhi”) were staunch RD loyalists.
The man who added his unique dash of pep and verve in to Hindi film music starting with the 60s. The music director who brought rock n’ roll to Hindi tunes, creating a brand of music so distinctly his own. Burman really brought the groove into Hindi Film Music, ushering in the era of electronic rock and providing Hindi Film Music with a whole new ’happening’ sound.
