This film is a symbolic enactment of the cleansing powers of that great Indian river the ‘Ganga’ (Ganges). The Ganga of the Film (Mandakini) symbolizes the river. Forever cleansing the sins of the teeming multitude that throngs its banks, but it self remains pure and unsullied. Narendra (Rajiv Kapoor), a city boy, meets Ganga, the simple girl of the mountains and marries her according to tribal customs. Promising to come back soon, he returns to Kolkata, to his father’s house. Unknown to him his marriage has been fixed with Radha (Divya Rana), daughter of his father’s crony. The film chronicles the struggles of Narendra and Ganga to come together.
Using the central character of ‘Ganga’ (Mandakini) as a symbol of the great Indian river, the Ganges, its innate cleaning powers, washing away the dirt, but itself never getting sullied, Raj Kapoor chronicles the struggles of Ganga and Narendra to remain united and pure in their love.
