About The Audio CD

‘Live In Concert’ - A performance, be it live or a studio recording is an experience every artiste cherishes. In a studio recording, the artist’s limitless caliber might tend to get constricted by space and time constraints. However, a live concert works on slightly different parameters. The acoustics and ambience of the performance venue are critical factors and help set the artiste’s mood initially. But the quality of the audience is what matters most. An appreciative audience can enhance the performance level. After all, when someone chooses a career as a performing artiste, the most motivating factor is appreciation. And when that is forthcoming, all else including economics, takes a back seat. The chemistry between the main artistes and their accompanists also gets a boost in the presence of a live audience. Besides, even the accompanists are encouraged to show off their musical prowess and draw personal appreciation.

When a simple ‘Wah’ converts to an ‘Aha’, an artiste’s ‘Sadhana’ towards the pursuit of the art form is justified. This further inspires the artistes to surpass their own levels. A few such precious moments of creativity have been captured by Saregama and are presented in this series ‘Live In Concert’.

About The Artiste

Padma Vibhushan Gaan Saraswati Kishori Amonkar
The doyenne of the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana is a rare blend of tradition, imagination and creativity. She inherited music from her mother and Guru the legendary artiste, Gaan Tapaswini Mogubai Kurdikar. An emotive artiste, her voice is full of Bhava (feelings). Her deep involvement and total commitment towards Hindustani Music, her continuous search for innovations and improvements, her urge to imbibe the subtleties of other Gharanas and her monumental voice, make her a unique artiste. Her ‘gayakee’ is a combination of intelligence and aesthetic sense with a distinct feminine touch. She is highly acclaimed and looked upon as a role model by the present generation of artistes. Her formidable ‘taleem’, inherent talent, magnificent voice and commanding presence, contribute towards the making of the distinctive artiste that she is.

The Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Academi Award and the Sangeet Natak Academi Fellowship are just some of the honors bestowed upon her. Having travelled widely, Gaan Saraswati Kishoritai Amonkar has left an indelible musical echo in each of the performance venues.

About The Music

This two CD-pack encompasses live concert recordings of Gaan Saraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar, thus justifying the series ‘Live In Concert’.

CD 1 consists of a night melody in raga Bhoop which is Kishoritai’s favorite raga. Her presentation, first, in a vilambit bandish ‘Pratham Sur Saadhe’ followed by the drut bandish ‘Jabse Tumeesana Laagalee’ greatly expounds her musical genius.

The next rendition is in the rare raga Bhinna Shadaj.

The lyrics and the music composition for both the above ragas are Kishoritai’s creations, immortalized in a 1989 recording.

CD 2 is recording from the year 1993. Although it features the same Bhoop Raga and the same bandish ‘Pratham Sur Saadhe’, Kishoritai’s innovativeness and mastery lend to it a totally new shade. It is Raga Bhoop, but in a different avatar. The following Tarana further embellishes this album.

The concluding Meerabai bhajan is a perfect closure to the album. It leaves the listener in a magical trance, akin to a communion with the Divine.
