These 16 syllables are called the "maha-mantra," or "great chant". Whereas the usual bhajan is usually performed by a soloist, the dhun usually involves the audience. The simplicity and spareness of the dhun is thus simpler to sing and assimilate in our daily lives.

Shankar Mahadevan Born in a family of music lovers, Shankar Mahadevan started playing the Harmonium at the age of four and soon learnt to play the Veena. He learnt classical music from his guru T.R.Balamani and after acquiring a sound classical base, he learnt to sing Marathi Bhajans, Abhangs and Bhavgeets from the reputed musician, Shrinivas Khale. Forever looking to break new grounds as a singer and musician, Shankar soon ventured into the realm of fusion music. His immense knowledge of music and his experimental and innovative style have, in recent years, earned him immense recognition.
