Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia

Born into a family of small businessman in Allahabad on 1st July, 1938 Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia began his musical journey at the age of 15 learning classical technique from Pandit Raja Ram and Pandit Visambharnath of Allahabad. However it was the flute recital by Pandit Bholanath at a concert in Varansi that inspired him to switch to the flute. Pandit Bholanath also became his tutor and mentor for the next 8 years.

Another significant mentor was Smt. Annapurna Devi daughter of the late Ustad Allaudin Khan an accomplished Sarod player. It is to be noted that Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia adopted the Sitar Sarod style of playing with an alap jor and Jhala. His musical training became more compete under her guidance and he soon embarked upon a performing career.

Pandit Chaurasia made his concert debut at Allahabad at the age of 17 when he was given an unexpected opportunity to perform a flute sole. He electrified the audience with the stunning performance. After that there was no looking back and by the mid 70s he had emerged as the foremost exponent of the Flute.

Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia is not merely a popular performer. He has managed to overcome the technical limitations imposed by the very nature of the instruments by his masterly breath control and his powerful blowing technique thus significantly contributing to expanding possibilities inherent in the Flute.

Awards and Honours have flowed Pandit Chaursia’s way since his early years from the sangeet Natak Academy National Award to the Mahrashtra Gaurav Puraskar to the Padma Bhushan. He has also contributed to folk and popular music he along with Pandit Shiv Kumar Had Composed the music for the films Silsila and Lamhein.

Raga Hemavati

One of the more uncommon ragas in the Indian classical ocuvre Raga Hemavati is essentially a South Indian raga Part of the Carnatic Tradition. However in this album Pandit Chaurasia gives a rare Protrayal of Raga Hemavait under the Hindustani style. Raga Hemavati is a late evening or early night raga.
