Milestone is a part where a traveller can check his progress in the journey. Individual artistes have enriched their music through their journey that was not less than a pilgrimage. But over the ages, the music also has travelled a lot and the outstanding artistes of different times have served as milestones indicating progress of music. The era of 78 RPM recordings lasted for quite a long period and was considering to be the golden era of music. Vocalists, Instrumentalists and Percussionists par excellence introduced themselves to the world of recording during this era. Under the series “Golden milestones” we release 78 RPM and EP recordings of outstanding artistes.
Sooraj Khan and Chand Khan were from amongst the early contributors to the Khayal in the cradle stage. Their Sham Churasi Gharana developed a tradition of classical duets of brothers. Ustad Salamat Ali Khan born in 1924 and Usatd Nazakat Ali Khan born in 1932 in Sham Chausi village of Hoshiyarpur district of the Punjab inherited the same tradition. Their father Usatd Vilayat Khan and uncle Ali Khan first trained them in Dhrupad and then in Khayaal, Thumri and Ghazal. Their innovative minds always induced them for constant experiments in music. Ustad Salamat Ali Khan gave importance to ‘Thehrao’ on notes whereas Usatd Nazkat Ali Khan used to project “Phirat” of voice.
Sweetness of voice, clarity of concept, elaboration of Ragas, novel improvisation were their forte. No other singing pair has been as successful as Nazakat-Salamat so far.
In this album, we present these brothers singing majestic Ragas-Mian Ki Todi (morning melody), Marwa and Gorakh Kalyan (evening melodies) and Malkauns and Adana (night melodies) on the one hand and svelte Thumries in Pahadi, Mishra Khamaj and Sindhi Kafi on the other hand.
