About The DVD

Mukhanach is a most popular mask dance of North Bengal and closely connected with the Rajvanshi tribe of South Dinajpur district of West Bengal. Mukhanach is an agrarian mode of celebration by recreating faces of God in dynamics of the myth and orality and connected with the celebration for prosperity and peace. Mukhanach is mainly celebrated during the local Gajon Festival in the month of Chaitra and linked with cultivation. Another major punctuation of this oral theatric tradition is related with Kali Puja that takes place on Deepawali day. The unique faces of God created in mask of various colour temperatures bring the mythology alive through religious movements and dynamic stances of various characters. This documentary highlights the oral tradition of Mukhanach celebration, the mask making and the rituals apart from touching upon the myths of the region.
