About the Artist

Rattan Mohan Sharma, a disciple of Pandit Jasraj, is from the illustrious Mewati Gharana whose stalwarts include his late grandfather, Pandit Motiramji and his uncles, Mahamopadhyaya Pandit Maniramji, Sangeetacharya Pandit Prataonarayanji and Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasrajji.

One of his recent releases through Times Music has been the recitation of the Gayatri Mantra which has been among the most successful audio releases in the spiritual category in recent times.

An ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio, Rattan Mohan Sharma has been the recipient of the prestigious Shankarrao Vyas Award for topping the grades in the Sangeet Visharad examinations conducted by the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Other awards won by him include The Mewati Gharana Gaurav Puraskar and Sur Ratna Award of the Bhakhande Lalit Kala Shiksham Samiti, Raipur.

This evening raga is from the ‘Kalyan’ Thata. Only teevra (sharp) ‘Ma’ is used in this raga and all notes are shudh (natural. Its Vaadi Swara (the note most frequently used or emphasised) is ‘Ga’ and Samvaadi (the second most frequently used note) is ‘Ni’.
Aroha: Ni Re Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa
Avroha: Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

Jog
This late night raga is from the ‘Kafi’ thata. It uses both varieties of ‘Ga’ (natural & flat) and komal (flat) ‘Ni’ is used. The ‘Re’ (third note) and ‘Dha’ (sixth note) swaras are forbidden in this raga. Its Vaddi Swara (the note most frequently used or empahsised) is ‘Ma’ and Samvaadi (the second most frequently used note) is ‘Sa’.
Aroha: Ni Sa, Ga Ma, Pa, Ni Sa
Avroha: Sa, Ni Pa Ma, Ga Ma, Ga Sa

This raga has an unusual scale with both natural and flat ‘Ga’ but no ‘Re’ or ‘Dha’.

Megh
Raga Megh is from the ‘Kafi’ Thata. ‘Ga’ and ‘Dha’ notes are forbidden in this raga. The Jati is Audav-Audav. Raga Megh is frequently quoted in literature as a heroic raga able to produce rain. It can be sung anytime during the rainy season. Its Vaadi Swara (the note most frequently used or emphasised) is ‘Re’ and Samvaadi (the second most frequently used note) is ‘Pa’.
