As a street orphan in Shimla, young Sikandar (Amitabh Bachchan) has to fend for himself. Working for Mr. Ramnath, he befriends his daughter Kamna. Ramnath leaves Shimla for Bombay. Sikander Follows. Fatima, a young widow working for Ramnath, adopts Sikandar. Everything is hunky-dory when in a major turn of events, Sikander, is mistaken for a thief by Ramnath and his world comes crashing down as Kaamna his love also mistakes him for a thief and wants nothing to do with Sikandar. Fatima’s death is the proverbial death knell for Sikandar.
Sikandar, becomes a police informer. He amasses both, a fortune and respect in society. He is also helping Kaamna, with her father’s medical bills without her knowledge. A nautch-girl, Zohra Bai (Rekha), finds Sikandar irrestible but Sikandar’s heart beats for Kamna who he cant forget.
Dilawar (Amjad Khan), a vengeful lover of Zohra and a dreaded criminal takes offense to her proximity to Sikandar. He gets revengeful. A young lawyer, Vishal (Vinod Khanna) saves Sikandar’s life. An obliged Sikandar brings him home. Unaware of Sikandar’s feelings for Kamna, Vishal develops an attraction for her. Kamna reciprocates. Sikandar is shattered. However, he sacrifices his love for the sake of his friend and arranges the marriage of Vishal and Kamna. The climax of this super hit film is very touching and is the high point.
