Agnihotra Shantipath

The march of civilization has had a sweeping effect on our daily life and living, compelling us to dwell largely on a physical plane in a state of tension and anxiety. Those among us who realize this in our moments of introspection, will surely appreciate the importance of reorienting ourselves with the eternal and universal forces of nature.

In fact, modern science has now acknowledged what the ancient sages and visionaries of India had always known. The simple universal fact that all the natural elements, extending up to the cosmic spheres of creation, are deeply related to every human individual.

That's why, among all the methods and rituals prescribed by the ancient Vedas to achieve tranquility, nothing perhaps is as relevant today as the Agnihotra Shantipath. The sheer sound of these chants has a purifying effect, not only on our individual dwelling places, but also the immediate neighbourhood and the entire environment. But of course, the most intimate and purifying effects of these mantras and rituals go to enrich and harmonize the body, mind and spirit of every human participant and audience.

The expanding reverberations of these potent Vedic mantras allow us to express our greetings and gratitude towards the benevolent life-giving forces of nature: Fire...Air...Water...Earth...and ether. The universal power of such energized sound is programmed to dispel much of the tension and turmoil of contemporary life...and bestow peace, harmony and happiness...to every human soul.

Those who wish to complement the joy and the benefits of listening to this album with the recommended observance of rituals may find the following order of instructions helpful.

To begin the Brahmayajna Vaidic Sandhya, you need to settle down in a quiet and secluded place and concentrate your mind For meditation. With three Omkaars and the Sangathan Sukta (Hymn of harmony and peace) you are ready to commence the ceremony.

Brahmayajna Vaidic Sandhya

The Sandhya begins by doing a minimum of three Pranayams, followed by the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra.

Achaman Mantra (Sipping of water)
Three Achamans are required in order to clear the throat by sipping water from the right palm.

Indriya-Sparsh Mantra (Touching of organs)
You are required to take a little water in your left palm, and reciting along with the Indriya-sparsh Mantra, You should dip the middle and the ring fingers of your right hand in the water each time and touch the respective organs as the Mantra suggests. First the right side of the mouth and then the left. Then touch each nostril respectively. Then touch the eyes. Then the navel cord. Touch the position of the heart. Then the throat, followed by the head. Then touch the right arm and the left. Then touch both palms front and back. The purport of this mantra is to pray to God so that our body-organs and our faculties therein remain strong and capable.

Ishwarprarthanapurvak Marjan Mantra (Purification of the organs)
Take water in the left palm and dipping the two middle fingers of the right hand sprinkle water on the various parts of the body along with the recital of this mantra for the Gods.

Pranayam Mantra (Breathing exercise)
Following the mantra mentally, perform the Pranayam in the prescribed manner with full concentration. This is to done three times.

Aghamarshan Mantra (To efface the sins)
Recite these along with the realization of the omnipresence and the omnipotence of the creator.
Dwitiya Achaman Mantra (The sipping of water once again)
Recite the Gayatri and the other prayers while doing the achaman three times yet again.
Manasa Parikrama Mantra (Mental circumambulation)
Rotate mentally in the six directions as indicated in the mantras while you visualize the supreme spirit and its expansive existence.

Upasthan Mantra
Recite these mantras with feeling of being close to the Almighty.
Gayatri Mantra (The Gayatri recitation, once again)
Meditate upon the supreme effulgence of the sin-destroying power behind the sun. Repeat thrice.

Samarpana

This prayer helps one to be free from vanity and offer all his good deeds and intentions to the pious service of the omnipresent.
Namaskar Mantra (Obeisance to the Lord)
Pay mental obeisance to the supreme source of all virtues, the benevolent father who has bestowed upon us peace and prosperity so generously!

Devayajna Agnihotra

Achaman Mantra (Sipping of water)
Taking a little water in the right palm, recite the three mantras and sip water after each recital.
Anga-Sparsh Mantra (Touching parts of the body)
Take some water in the left palm. Dip the middle and the ring fingers of the right hand in water, and touch the respective parts of the body along with the recitals. Wash both hands as you finish.

Ishwarstutiprarthanopasana Mantra (Prayer to God)
Purify yourself by sprinkling water all over the body, and meditate upon the Almighty with complete surrender.
Swastivachana
Follow with concentration the recitation of the benedictory mantras.
Shantikarana
With these auspicious hymns of peace we seek the Lord's blessings so that all the natural elements are in harmony and co-operation with us.

Agnyadhan Mantra
The Anihotra rituals begin with the chanting of Om Bhur Bhuva Swah, followed by the two mantras of Agnipradipta and Samidadhan as the sacrificial fire is lit by lighting a bit of camphor placed on a long-handled spoon (Struba). The fire is then transferred onto the fire pan (Havan Kund) and is then further fanned with the addition of ghee and camphor.

This flaming mass of fire is regarded as a symbol of the almighty and the offering of oblations like ghee and sandalwood, and the spirit of surrender and sacrifice, help us in reaching out to the higher realms of human existence.

Ghritahuti Mantra (Oblation of Ghee)
Along with the recital of this mantra, pour a spoonful of clarified butter (ghee) over the burning fire reciting 'svaha' each time.

Jalprasechan Mantra (Sprinkling of water)
After the recital of each mantra pour water respectively in the eastern, western, northern sides and then all-round, beginning with the southern direction of the fire-pan.

Agharavajyabhagahuti Mantra (Two libations of ghee)
With the recital of these two mantras, offer two libations respectively in the northern and the southern parts of the fire with the utterance of 'svaha'.

With these two mantras offer ghee into the middle of the fire, with the utterance of 'svaha'.

Pratahkaleen Pradhan Homa (For the morning sacrifice)
These are the chief oblations of Agnihotra.
Along with these mantras ghee and other sacrificial material (Samagri) are to be offered into the fire with the sincere utterance of 'savha'.

Pratah-Sayankaleen Mantra (For both morning and evening)
With the recital of these mantras, offer the oblations of ghee and other sacrificial materials simultaneously into the fire, with the utterance of 'svaha'.

Sayankaleen Homa Mantra (For the evening ceremony)
Offer the evening oblations along with the mantras. The third mantra here, being a repetition, need not be uttered aloud.

Purnahuti Prakaranam (Leading to the final oblation)
Agharavajyahuti Mantra (Libation of ghee)
Offer libation of ghee onto the northern side of the fire-pan along with the utterance of this mantra.
Ajyabhagahuti Mantra (Further libation of ghee)
Offer libation onto the southern side of the yajna-kund.
Vyahrityahuti Mantra (Four libations of ghee)
Offer four libations of ghee onto the flaming fire-sticks in the middle of the fire pan.

Swistakridahuti Mantra (Just one libation)
Offer one libation of ghee or cooked rice onto the fire.
Prajayatyahuti Mantra (One libation)
This libation is to be offered over a silent (mental) recital of the mantra.
Ajyahuti and Ashtajyahuti Mantra (Multiple libations)
Offer four and eight libations of ghee respectively along with the utterance of these penultimate mantras.
Purnahuti (The final oblation)
Recite this thrice, offering the remaining ghee and other samagri onto the fire with utterance of 'svaha'.
See that no oblation remains after this last offering.

O almighty God! May this ceremony and the rituals performed by us be deemed faultless and attain perfection by thy grace! We pray to thee!

(Note: While the above mantras deal with daily rituals, there are special mantras dedicated to specific occasions and days of the calendar. These may be added on to the daily ritual as per the demands of the events.)
