A cult figure in the realm of Sufiana poetry, ghazals and Punjabi folk tunes, Abida Parveen has attracted a huge following in the sub-continent.
Born in the Pakistani town of Larkana, Sindh, she hails from a musical family. Her father Ghulam Haider ran a music school, and as a child, she was deeply exposed to the poetry and music of the Sufi saints.
After initially training under her father, Abida added finesse to her craft when she took tutelage from vocalist Ustad Salamat Ali Khan. With her full-throated and captivating voice, she earned huge popularity. Her command over classical nuances and her ability to effortlessly express serious poetry were appreciated by connoisseurs. Following the death of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1997, many considered Abida to be the foremost singer in the otherwise male – dominated genre of Sufiana music.
This two-volume compilation ‘KOHINOOR CLASSICS’ contains some of the most brilliant tracks Abida has recorded over the years. Songs like ‘Aandhi Chali’, ‘Sadhe Wehre’, ‘Rang Baatein Karein’ and ‘Maahi Yaar Di Gharoli’ are all evidence of her enormous talent.
