The Sunset Stone of Healing: Carnelian

A member of the Chalcedony family, Carnelian (formerly known as Cornelian) is a brownish-red mineral. The reddish tint of Carnelian owes itself to the occurrence of iron oxide impurities in the stone. Carnelian comes in different shades, ranging from a pale orange to a fierce almost-black color. While, today, Carnelian is a more common term, it is actually a corruption of its former name, ‘Cornelian.’ Carnelian is derived from the Latin term, ‘cornum’, which comes from the ‘cornel cherry’ which are translucent red fruits that bear resemblance to this gemstone. The word ‘Carnelian’ is often associated with energy and creativity.

The Carnelian stone has assumed many roles throughout history. It was commonly used as a fertility stone in ancient times. It was also utilized by warriors during battles for protection and healing. The common perception about the carnelian stone in the olden days was that it held special powers that were attributed to personal growth and confidence. Some Egyptian traditions also considered the Carnelian stone a sacred gem that was blessed with feminine energy, thereby attributing to fertility. However, the Red Carnelian existed in the masculine form as well, wherein it was more active and embraced the fiery energy of the new and unforeseen. The Carnelian gem has also been attributed to the longevity of life and courage. The most popular use of the Carnelian stone is for confidence and personal power.

Healing Properties of Carnelian:

Also used synonymously with the names, The Singer’s Stone, The Sunset Stone and the Artist’s Stone, the Carnelian is known for its energetic, creative powers. With powerful healing abilities, the Carnelian gemstone is known to heal the body, mind and soul.

  • Its physical healing properties include tissue and organ stimulation, libido boost, and detoxifying the body. Much like all other fire stones, the Carnelian uses the energy of light to heal the body. It is also said to heal bones and ligaments, giving the body a sense of freedom.

  • In terms of its mental and emotional healing aspects, the Carnelian stone is known to boost the spirit, stimulate warmth and heat, and inspire creativity. If you’re feeling a little lost and stuck, or you’re experiencing a creative block, the Carnelian stone helps you get out of that rut and allows your creative juices to flow freely.

  • When it comes to the stone’s metaphysical healing properties, it is most commonly linked to the 3 lower chakras, much like all other orange healing stones. The Root Chakra is considered the fundamental force of all the chakras that keeps us grounded. When this chakra is blocked, you may experience an imbalance in your well-being as well as insecurities creeping onto the surface. The Carnelian helps unblock this chakra, thereby allowing for the free flow of energy. Residing in the Sacral Chakra are passion, intimacy and inner fire. When this chakra is blocked, it is difficult to feel connected to the rest of the world and feel happy. The Carnelian helps in releasing this tension. Lastly, the Carnelian is also linked to the Solar Plexus Chakra. This is where our personal power and self-confidence lie. When blocked, your fighting spirit starts to deteriorate. The Carnelian helps in clearing up this Chakra, thereby unleashing your warrior spirit.

Due to its association with strength and courage, the Carnelian was worn as an amulet by warriors and priests. Just like all other healing stones, the maximum power of the Carnelian is unlocked when it is in direct contact with the skin. Carnelian jewelry helps in the cleansing of the aura. It is commonly worn with Agate, Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Onyx and Citrine.
