Dwelling Into Tamil Nadu and Its Take On Astrology

When asked about the history of languages in India, the most common assumption is that all Indian languages were born out of the mother of all languages, Sanskrit. However, this is an incorrect inference, because Sanskrit was not the only language that existed in ancient India. Tamil, often referred to as the sister language of Sanskrit, was another ancient language that has been present in the world for over 2000 years. It is one of the only Indian languages that does not draw its origin from Sanskrit. Descending from the Dravidian family, this beautiful language has a rich history attached to its name. Drawing inspiration from the Brahmi script, Tamil literary works exhibit similar writing styles. The letter shapes changed dramatically over time, ultimately stabilizing when printing was invented in the 16th century. The integration of Grantha letters to write unassimilated Sanskrit words was a huge contribution to the alphabet, although several letters with odd shapes were standardized during the modern era. Today, Vatteluttu ("Round Script") is another widely used script in Tamil. This dialect is primarily used in Tamil Nadu as well as Puducherry. Outside the Indian borders, Tamil is also used by the people of Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.

Nadi Astrology

Nadi Astrology is a type of Dharma astrology that is exercised in Tamil Nadu and some other adjoining parts of India. It is premised on the idea that Hindu sages predicted numerous people's current lives thousands of years ago. This is the prominent form of astrology that prevails in Tamil Nadu even to this day.

Texts in Tamil Nadu are mostly composed in Vattezhuthu, an abugida script that was used to write Tamil until the 12th century. The manuscripts' material is generally traced to the Vedic sage Agastya, who is thought to have had a highly advanced consciousness. Experts all around the Vaitheeswaran Temple in the state of Tamil Nadu made these historic records of providence popular. First, the thumb imprints are used to locate the Naadi palm leaves (right for men, left for women). These Naadi leaves were originally housed in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, at the Saraswati Mahal Library. Later, British colonialists became interested in the Naadi leaves, which were associated with herbs and medical science, future prediction, and so on.

Types of Nadi Astrology

Broadly, two forms of Nadi Astrology exist:

  • Naadi - It mainly speaks of an individual’s past, present and future. The main areas covered are related to one’s career, relationships, health, and so on.

  • Jeeva Nadi - This form of Nadi Astrology gives an immediate prediction of an individual’s life. It deals with Gnana and Nakshatra.
