Saints and sages are considered great authorities in the path of spirituality. They are self-realized and are situated in their Swaroop. Therefore, it is very important to follow in their footsteps. There are many Vedic books recommended by the saints to read and absorb transcendental knowledge.
Some of them are the Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Ramayan, Sri Isopanishad, Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, Chaitanya Charitamrita (Chatinaya Bhagavat). Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita are considered graduation syllabi, while the other books are meant for advanced devotees. The Sanskrit term used for Hindu saints is “Sadhu”. A Sadhu is self-realized and knows the material world's nature very well. He is situated in transcendental knowledge and is free from material attachments. Instead, he always remains absorbed in the devotion of the Supreme Lord, the cause of all causes. The Vedic scriptures emphasize the importance of associating with a Sadhu because even a moment of this association can transform a person’s heart and begin his path of enlightenment.
Although India has had many great saints and sages appear in its land of religion or Dharma. One such saint is Shri Madhvacharya who appeared in South India and was known for his extraordinary intellectual power and influence.
He proposed the “Dvaita” (dualism) philosophy over the “Advaita” (non-dualism) aspect given by Shankaracharya. Madhvacharya defeated thousands and lakhs of Mayavadis in debates over these two aspects. According to him, Jiva (the living entity) and Ishvara (God) have their own individuality and Jiva always remains dependent on Ishvara.
It is very difficult to tell who the first saint was but as far as the Bhakti movement is concerned, Shri Ramanujacharya was the earliest exponent. Ramanujacharya appeared in South India and developed the influence of the “Sri Vaishnava” tradition or Sampradaya.
His major proposition
was to propose the Vishishtadvaita Vedanta philosophy, according to which, the
Jiva (soul) and Brahman (the Absolute Truth) have their individuality but the
Jivas have the potential to merge into the Brahman after attaining liberation.
